What does appliance removal involve?
Appliance removal means we pull the unit out of its spot, strap it to a dolly and carry it to the truck. We ask that water and gas lines be shut off and disconnected before we arrive, since that work belongs to a plumber or the gas company. Once the unit is free, we handle the rest, including stairs and tight laundry closets.
After pickup, metal appliances go to scrap recycling. Refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners and dehumidifiers go where the refrigerant can be recovered first. Federal rules require that step, and you can read EPA's safe disposal rules for refrigerant appliances if you want the details.
When do you need an appliance hauled away?
- A new appliance is being delivered and the store will not take the old one.
- A chest freezer in the basement or garage died and still has a smell from spoiled food.
- A water heater was replaced and the old tank is sitting in the yard.
- You are selling a house and the extra fridge in the garage has to go before closing.
- A rental unit has a broken washer or range the tenant left behind.

Why are old appliances so hard to dispose of?
Old appliances are hard to dispose of because of weight and refrigerant. Appliances that contain Freon are not accepted in the city's bulky item program, so an old fridge or freezer cannot simply go out to the curb. Even non-Freon units like washers and ranges are too heavy for most people to move safely, and hauling them down a basement stairwell is how people hurt their backs. Summer heat is hard on garage freezers too. In July and August an old chest freezer in an uninsulated garage runs almost nonstop, and that is often when it finally quits.
What affects the cost of appliance removal?
- Type of appliance. Units with refrigerant need extra handling before scrapping.
- How many units. Two or three appliances in one trip cost less per piece than separate visits.
- Location. A washer in a first-floor laundry room is quicker than a chest freezer at the bottom of basement stairs.
- Access outside. A long carry or a steep driveway adds time.

Should you repair an old appliance or replace it?
A repair makes sense when the appliance is fairly new and the fix is a single part, such as a washer lid switch or a dryer belt. Replacement usually makes more sense when a refrigerator compressor fails or the repair bill runs close to half the price of a new unit. A leaking water heater tank cannot be patched, so once it starts dripping, plan to replace it and have the old one hauled off.

Do you disconnect the appliance before removing it?
No. For safety, gas and water lines should be shut off and disconnected before the appliance removal visit, either by you or by a plumber. Once the unit is free, we handle the heavy work and the disposal.
Can you take a refrigerator that still has food in it?
Please empty the refrigerator or freezer before we arrive. Spoiled food leaks during transport and cannot go to the recycler with the unit. If the unit is sealed and you cannot face opening it, tell us when you call and we will plan for it.
Will you take appliances along with other junk?
Yes. Appliance removal can be part of a bigger haul. We often pick up a washer and dryer along with sofas and bed frames in a single trip, which costs less than two separate visits.
